10 Tips for a Healthy Summer!

Choosing a healthy lifestyle doesn’t take a lot. This summer, improve your fitness by making small yet conscious choices to make the most of this beautiful season. We’ve rounded up some of the best (and the easiest) healthy lifestyle tips for you to stay happy and active all summer:

1. Pre-plan your meals 

Break your meals into smaller portions and spread them throughout the day. This way, you will not only have more control over what you eat but you also prevent a lot of unhealthy cravings. For more inspiration, check out my recent vlog on what I eat in a day.

2. Choose a healthy breakfast 

There’s no denying that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Choose a meal that gives you a complete nutrition boost right at the start of the day. I’m currently giving GAIA’s Strawberry Muesli a try- it’s packed with protein, fibre and antioxidants along with a delightful strawberry flavour. Plus, it tastes equally delicious with milk, juice and yoghurt.


3. Try a warm-weather sport or activity

It’s very important to stay active in summer instead of hiding from the sun. All you have to do is find something that you truly enjoy (surfing, running, swimming yoga) and start doing it more often.

4. Choose green tea over sweet tea/coffee

Would you choose tea that adds to your calories (and caffeine intake) or one that detoxifies your body? Green tea can do wonders for both your mind as well as body. Choose a flavour of your choice and add a cup or two to your daily routine. On a side note, I have felt a drastic improvement in my digestion with just two cups a day of Gaia’s Lemon & Honey Green Tea. The flavour too, is a lovely mix of sweet and tangy, so you get the best of both worlds.

5. Include a good variety of fruits and veggies in your diet

It’s easy to sink into a vegetable rut, eating the same boring veggies week after week, but with summer comes fresh choices. Include a mix of in-season colorful fruits and veggies in your meals to give your body a nutrient kick.

6. Sleep in on weekends

Don’t tire yourself out. Have a laid back weekend every once in a while and catch up on your sleep. Sleep deprivation decreases your body’s ability to control glucose levels, which can lead to increased insulin production and weight gain- so make sure your getting enough of those zzz’s.

7. Healthy Snacking at work 

It’s completely normal to feel hungry between meals, especially on work days. Your body needs a constant supply of good carbs and proteins in order to fight fatigue. However, it’s your duty to indulge mindfully and make healthy snack choices. For example, actively choose roasted snacks over fried foods, or you could go for fibre cookies instead ordinary cookies. Two great healthy snack options are Gaia’s Apple and Cinnamon Granola Bar and their healthy Trail Mix with protein rich seeds, nuts and dried fruits. FYI, they also make for great post-workout snack. For cookies, my current favourite is Gaia’s Multigrain cookies that are big on health and small on guilt!

8. Keep yourself hydrated

Goes without saying, you need to increase your water intake during summers. Keeping your refrigerator stocked with fresh fruits, juices and healthy energy drinks also helps!

9. Reduce sugar Intake

Avoid added sugars and aerated beverages as much as you can. Most carbonated drinks contain preservatives, colours and sugars. They are acidic in nature and act as diuretics which cause loss of fluids through urine. Stick to natural sugar from fruits and fruit juices.

10. Enjoy summer! 

Take time off from your regular routine. By giving your mind and body time to relax, you’ll gain more strength and continue making improvements in the gym with less risk of burning out or getting injured.
