When it comes to health and fitness we often relate it to the care of our physical body be it about losing weight, getting in shape or eliminating any sort of disease. We often overlook the most important part that helps us in the formation and accumulation of this physical self i.e our mouth. Our teeth are the first important step in our digestive process that can transform our identity because they help us in getting the look we want so badly. So, even if you have a perfect body but unhealthy tooth, you will not be confident or happy and your eating habits will hence suffer greatly. These days’ oral cancer, tooth sensitivity and issues like cavity are on rise. Some studies have even linked common oral problems to illnesses, including heart disease,stroke, diabetes, premature birth, osteoporosis, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

I am myself guilty of not having a good dental hygiene. Therefore this post will comprise of five simple and amazing habits to kick start today for that perfect wide and gorgeous and healthy smile!

Habit #1

Maintain a Healthy Diet

A healthy diet is essential for healthy gums and teeth. There are some foods that have a clear effect on the mouth’s ability to handle cavity-causing bacteria attacks. For example Calcium-fortified juices, milk and other dairy products are rich in calcium and vitamin D and they help in promoting healthy teeth and bones while reducing the risk for tooth loss. Replace your junk filled snacks with more fruits and healthy options. Drinking plenty of water is another way to keep the health of your mouth in check.

Habit #2

Practice Good Oral Hygiene

Good oral hygiene is not just about brushing twice a day but has a lot to do with the kind of brush and toothpaste you use and the process of how you brush and keep your teeth clean. It is recommended that we use soft brushes than the hard ones to avoid gum bleeding.  Also, flossing your teeth once a day can be a lifesaver.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

Prevention is always better than cure. For a better examination and evaluation of your dental health, one must visit the dentist on a regular basis. It will help in preventing the problems to develop and cause more deterioration. If you think you don’t have any symptoms or issues and you don’t need a visit then this is to inform you that there are many oral health problems that have no symptoms and can only be diagnosed by a dentist. So, do visit your dentist once a year.

Quit Smoking

If you want to avoid yellowed teeth, tooth loss, periodontal disease and bad breath then you have to give up on smoking for good. Smoking has a lot of dangerous affects and one of them is the health of your tooth. Your mouth will be forever grateful to you if you can give up on that addiction. And of course your body will feel much better and healthier with that choice. There are many ways you can kick this habit off, you can try non-nicotine substances and develop a fitness inspired lifestyle to change your belief systems around smoking.

Habit #5

Avoid Sugar

The two elements in food that are the main culprits of tooth sensitivity are sugars and acids. While acids attack directly and weaken the enamel, if sugars are allowed to remain in the mouth they are feasted upon by bacteria, and they release acids that lead to erosion. Prolonged wearing down of the enamel, exposes the inner dentine, which can cause a short sharp sensations known as tooth sensitivity, characterized by intolerance for hot/cold foods. One must avoid eating items like fizzy drinks, candies, chocolates and peanut butter that can harm your mouth.
