Weight loss and PCOS

If you’ve been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, or commonly called as PCOS, you may feel like you can’t lose weight no matter what you do. PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormonal disorder that affects up to 20 percent of pre-menopausal women. Though doctors aren’t sure about exactly what causes PCOS but it definitely is a disheartening situation for a lot of women out there that leads to numerous implications for general health and well-being including weight gain, depression and stress.

It is basically a condition in which a woman has an imbalance of female hormones and excess testosterone is linked to higher rates of insulin resistance, which can cause you to store more fat, especially around your abdomen area. It also creates cysts in the ovaries, you may have trouble getting pregnant, acne, excessive hair growth (hirsutism) on the face, chest, back, and stomach , hair loss from scalp, weight gain, depression, and skin changes, such as skin tags or dark, velvety skin patches under the arm, on the neck, or in the groin etc.

But, did you know?

Reducing your body weight helps decrease hormonal abnormalities. Losing as little as 5 percent of your body weight can improve insulin. Obviously, modest weight loss will not cure PCOS, but it will help. Weight loss can restore the normal function of the ovaries and result in normal hormone production. This may in turn lead to improvements in symptoms of PCOS, such as excess hair growth, acne or scalp hair loss.

A large number of research studies have shown that weight loss can :

  • reduce insulin resistance by about 50%
  • restore ovulation
  • regulate menstrual cycles
  • reduce pregnancy complications
  • improve fertility
  • improve the health of a child during pregnancy
  • improve emotional health (self-esteem, anxiety, depression)
  • reduce risk factors for diabetes and heart disease
  • improve health during pregnancy
